The capital of the Atlantico department along the Caribbean coast, the city of Barranquilla is the fourth largest city of Colombia. This bustling port along the Caribbean coastline is also the largest industrial city in the north-Colombian region. Barranquilla served as haven for European immigrants who fled their respective nations in during the two world wars. Increasing corruption in the administrative bodies of this city led its standard of living to decline after 1940.
